There are many associations dedicated to cybersecurity information out there for engineers. Many of them are dedicated to helping engineers regardless of their specialty, particularly in the last few years. It’s a necessity with the engineering world – operational technology (OT) – merging with the information technology (IT) world. The rise of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) over the last several years has made it necessary for engineers to be secure in the digital realm as well as the physical. This has been a major adjustment for both sides, but there are plenty of sources out there to help them.

Many of the respondents in a recent survey do not limit themselves to just one source. While the International Society of Automation (ISA) was viewed the most at just under 50%, the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), SANS Institute and Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) were viewed by more than a quarter of respondents.

When it comes to government sources, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is the clear front-runner with almost two-thirds of respondents picking them. The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US CERT) and Critical Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) are being used by a little over a third of survey respondents each. NIST is a part of the U.S. Department of Commerce and has been in operation since 1903, which has given it plenty of time to build its reputation as a ubiquitous source of information for users in many areas beyond cybersecurity.

There are many resources out there for engineers looking to stay safe and cybersecure. The associations involved are looking to make sure they are well prepared for the day when a cyber attack might happen. When it does, the consequences can be dire.
